Royal Caribbean’s Oasis of the Seas will have a full-blown baby nursery on board — a first for the line as it caters ever more to families with young children.

The specially-staffed Royal Babies and Tots Nursery, as it’s being called, will welcome babies as young as six months old and is just part of a massive children’s area the line is unveiling online tonight for the 5,400-passenger vessel — the largest ever built.

Dubbed The Youth Zone, the 29,000-square-feet kiddie area also will have dedicated space for the line’s signature Adventure Ocean program for grade school children (ages 3-11) and state-of-the-art teen areas — all revolving around a central boulevard to be called Kids Avenue.

Dion & CNN

Oct 23rd.

CNN) — Dion couldn’t understand it.

Dion gives such classics as “Summertime Blues” and “Jailhouse Rock” his interpretation on his new CD.

The rock ‘n’ roll legend, who dominated the charts in the ’50s and ’60s with such hits as “A Teenager in Love,” “Runaround Sue,” “The Wanderer” and “Abraham, Martin and John,” was asking a “young rock friend,” in Dion’s words, about some musical pioneers. Had he heard of Cliff Gallup? The Burnette brothers?

The friend had no idea what Dion, 69, was talking about.

“I said, ‘People like Jeff Beck revere them,’ ” the singer said from southern Florida.

“Rock ‘n’ roll started in the ’50s, not the ’60s. And I started thinking, a lot of people — even the kids buying the [old] records — they don’t understand the significance of Cliff Gallup, James Burton and Scotty Moore,” Dion continued, naming guitarists known for their work with Gene Vincent, Ricky Nelson and Elvis Presley, respectively.

“These guys infused freedom into the music,” he said. “And I thought it would be a fun thing to record the songs.”

Which led to Dion’s new album, “Heroes: Giants of Early Guitar Rock” (Saguaro Road). The CD features Dion’s take on songs including Eddie Cochran’s “Summertime Blues,” the Everly Brothers’ “Bye Bye Love,” Presley’s “Jailhouse Rock” and Big Joe Turner’s “Shake, Rattle and Roll,” songs known as much for their big beats and driving guitars as their vocal performances.

Don’t Miss

Dion’s backed by a crack band he proudly describes as “under the radar,” including drummer Michael Harvey and guitarist Crow Richardson, and takes a few guitar leads himself.

But in front is the man himself, the guy born Dion DiMucci with the voice rock critic Dave Marsh described as “rough as sharkskin, smooth as Italian knit.” It’s the voice that, in rock history, rides “The Wanderer” like a horseman galloping on a stallion, eases into “Ruby Baby” as if putting on a butter-soft leather jacket and snarls “Daddy Rollin’ (In Your Arms)” — a song Dion wrote about his heroin addiction — like a defiantly frightened child.

“I describe myself as a rhythm singer,” Dion said. “There’s a place where you place words, and if you don’t place them there, you’re sunk. I learned from listening to horn players at the Apollo [Theater in Harlem]; they had to be right on the money.

“The biggest thing,” he added, warming to the subject, “is that people don’t dance [anymore].”

Dion and his colleagues routinely played halls where a crowd of teenagers would let the performer know right away if there was no groove: “It’s got a good beat, and you can dance to it” really meant something. Rock groups today, he observes, don’t get that kind of feedback from concert halls: “[The audience doesn't] feel it, and if they don’t feel it, you’re sunk.”

Dion revels in the history and depth of the “Heroes” tunes. “Take a song like [Del Shannon's] ‘Runaway’ — it’s like an opera,” he said. “Or [Buddy Holly's] ‘Rave On’ — just the title gets you going. And if you take a song like ‘Believe What You Say’: Johnny and Dorsey Burnette wrote it and the great Paul Burlison played behind it. … Ricky Nelson learns it, then James Burton plays behind it. So each song has such a history.”

Dion was in the middle of much of this history. He knew a number of rock pioneers personally. With his old group, the Belmonts, he was on the ill-fated Winter Dance Party tour during which which Holly, the Big Bopper and Ritchie Valens lost their lives in a 1959 plane crash. Dion would have been on the plane himself but didn’t want to part with the $36 fee, a fortune to a boy who grew up poor in the Bronx.

He’s even on the cover of the Beatles’ “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” one of just two rock-era singers to make the cut (Bob Dylan being the other).

On an accompanying DVD, Dion tells several stories about his old colleagues and demonstrates some of the guitar playing on the records. “I show how it was done,” he said, taking pride in his musicianship.

“I’m excited about this,” he said. “I had fun doing this. I heard these songs in person five times a day, so it’s in my DNA.”

Those songs, he adds, have developed a reputation as golden oldies, harmless tunes conflated with sock hops and neon-soaked diners. They were anything but.

“It wasn’t Sha Na Na. It was anything but dumb; it was bad,” he said, stressing every ounce of danger in the word.

And Dion? He’s not so bad anymore — clean for 40 years, laughing about how wife insisted that he include “The Wanderer” or “I’ll kick your ass if you don’t.” But, he says, he still has the fire of that young rock ‘n’ roller.

“There’s an 18-year-old inside me,” he said

According to Time Magazine, Bill Wilson, the Co-Founder of Alcoholics Anonymous, is one of the “Most Important People of the Century.” Aldous Huxley called him “the greatest social architect of our century.”

Imagine a guy with an ego big enough to start a world wide movement, but smart enough to turn down Time Magazine’s offer to be on the cover, even backwards without his face showing. I guess he stayed connected to something much bigger.

Bed Bugs Are Back

Oct 17th.

grapevine-cryer

It’s a dirty little secret. When you travel, everything you touch in your hotel room is a public surface, and many of the surfaces you touch are not cleaned after each guest check-out.
Bed Bugs are Back
Virtually eradicated in the United States in 1950’s, bed bugs have made a resounding recovery, and infestations have been found in the finest domestic and international hotels. While they don’t typically carry disease bed bugs cause itchy bites and may hitch a ride home with you on your clothing or luggage. Once established in your home, they are very difficult to get rid of.

As soon as you arrive at your hotel, look for small rusty or dark brown spots on the bedding, mattress, and in the corners of the room. Bed bugs love the dark, so check the nightstand, behind the headboard, and under or behind any other furniture or fixtures within 15 feet or so of the bed. Use the luggage stand to keep your bags off the floor, and check your luggage and clothing carefully before you leave. Should you find evidence of bed bugs on your belongings, treat your luggage and contents immediately.
Bedding
The bed is typically the largest feature of the room, and as a result the bedspread gets a lot of use – sitting, reading, watching TV, etc. Bedspreads are not washed daily – in fact they may be cleaned just once a month or less. Blankets and pillows are not on the daily laundry list either, and dust mites, dander and other human detritus can be a problem for those with allergies.

As soon as you enter your room, remove the bedspread, fold it up, and stow it in a corner for the duration of your stay. To avoid contact with pillows and blankets, use a sleep sack.
Carpet
While carpets are vacuumed daily, they are rarely shampooed, and dirt, germs and bed bugs may be left behind. Wear shoes or slippers and never walk barefoot on the carpet.
Drinking Glasses, Ice Buckets and Coffee Makers
Several news reports have captured hotel housekeeping on tape giving glasses a just cursory rinse, wiping them ‘clean’ with the same rags that cleaned the bathroom and drying them with used towels in preparation for the next guest (ice buckets and coffee makers often receive the same treatment). Many viruses and bacteria can live for extended periods on these surfaces.

Wash glassware, ice buckets and coffeemakers in hot, soapy water before using, or bring your own travel cup for extra peace of mind.
TV Remote, Phone, Alarm Clock, Light
Switches and Doorknobs
It is unlikely that any of these often-touched items are cleaned on a regular basis. Clean them with disinfectant spray or wipes and use hand sanitizer frequently.

Plan, plan, plan! It’s easier to take the time to plan your wardrobe out then to haul a heavy suitcase through airports and try to find more closet space in your cabin on any cruise! If you have booked any type of Suite, take anything you want as you will have plenty of closet space in your cabin and will only have to pay the airline freight depending on who you fly. If you have a Balcony, Oceanview, or Interior Stateroom and you have a roommate, let’s get down to “outfits!”
On a 7 Night cruise you have two formal nights; Black Tie or Dark Suit for the gents, and Cocktail Dresses/Suits or Gowns for the ladies. If one of those formal nights falls on Halloween, you have a “Costume Optional” night which we always take on the Halloween Gratitude Cruise. (This year I have a kooky hand made day time costume too!)

Lay out your clothing for 7 nights first:
Two formal nights, five nights of smart casual, meaning no flip flops or tshirts in the dining room. Pick one nice looking outfit for each night and match the shoes/handbags/stockings/socks to each. Guys, shirts with collars only and no jeans. Try to use several items several times (like black slacks) with different outfits and mix it up with different tops/jackets/jewelry. I used to cruise with 15 pairs of shoes but have it down to about 5! Plan on strong air conditioning on the ships and ladies bring a wrap of some kind. If you want to stay in shorts you can eat a the buffet anytime. You need a bathing suit cover up to eat at the buffet also.

Pick a day time outfit for each day. Choose light weight clothing that you can layer according to temperature. I found it overwhelming hot in Alaska in June and freezing on a ship in October. The layering worked wonders. Match the shoes, tops, accessories etc. with each outfit. Bring one extra outfit for bathing suit port days on tropical cruises as you will be changing when you get back to the ship to go to tea time or exploring. Bring sunscreen and the type of travel bag that stays secure on your body and leaves your hands free to take photos, like a sling bag. THAT’S IT!!! No, don’t bring another outfit “just in case!” Make your decisions now, not later.

I find if I roll up clothing, it is less wrinkled and packs easier. I keep formal wear in a lightweight suiter in my suitcase. If you have a cloth suitcase, make sure you line it with black garbage plastic bags. I’ve had my clothing completely water destroyed by the airlines in my London Fog cloth suitcase due to inclement weather at connecting airports. I have one good lightweight hard suitcase now and a hand scale from www.magellans.com for $9.85 that tells me when I’ve hit 50 lbs!

Carry your cosmetics on flights. Buy snack size tiny baggies and put everything you will need for a week individually and mark them with a sharpie. Squeeze a weeks worth of lotions & potions into each one and take two tubes of travel toothpaste. Ships have shampoo and soap. You can have a bunch of these baggies and up no space or weight at all.

You can take your laptop to have WIFI in your cabin on most ships. However unless you have to work continuously, leave it home. On most ships there is an Internet Cafe. You will get a per minute price and I find it more economical to buy one hour blocks. There is no such thing as DSL at sea, only sloooooooooooowwwww satellites, so bring your email address list with you as you’ll be home before your address book loads on your screen at sea!

Above all else, KISS….Keep It Simple at Sea! It’s a vacation for fun, relaxation and getting away from reality like nothing else you’ve ever done, so enjoy it! 84% of people have never even taken a cruise and are missing this phenominal experience. You are one of the lucky ones! Embrace the adventure!
