History

There is no better value for you vacation dollar than a cruise. On a land resort, you must pay separately for hotel room accommodations, entertainment, restaurants, ground transportation and airfare between different cities. You also have to pack and unpack in order to visit many locations. A cruise is all inclusive for one price and the party is always right outside your door at any pace you choose to participate in. It is action packed, or slow and relaxed with something for every age and preference.

As a courtesy, cruise ships have a “Friends of Bill W.” meeting listed on ship itineraries. However, you never know if there will be any other cruiser in recovery onboard looking for a meeting or if you will meet the guy many of us have run into who is at the meeting with a martini in his hand asking, “Where is this guy Bill? He has so many friends on all the cruise ships I want to meet him!” The last cruise Snow P. took before creating Sober Celebrations, there were 2600 passengers onboard, and she was the only attendee at the meeting.

In 2001, the website, wwwsobercelebrations.com was built as a labor of love so folks could go on vacation knowing fellowship would be onboard when they arrived. The 1st annual fall cruis in 2002 had 54 attendees. In 2005, 200 cruisers got onboard megaship Mariner of the Seas for a fabulous cruise and 12 Step History Conference led by Mel B., 55 years of sobriety. In 2006, 130 cruisers were fortunate enough to get Sober Celebrations cabins onboard the Inaugural Halloween Sailing of Freedom of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world. We had our staterooms before most people ever heard of this ship and for the 2nd year in a row, Gratitude Cruise attendees won one of the ship’s awards for best group costume! While meetings onboard, like conferences, are only for those who have registered, cruisers at the public “Friends of Bill W.” meeting benefit from our registered guests who attendee the public meetings also.

We are blessed with getting the newest and hottest ships at affordable prices. Plans for the Gratitude Cruise® are generally made while ships are still under construction.

The company is run by one woman, Snow P. with 36 years in recovery. She considers it an honor to be of service in this manner and dedicates her travel agency to the sole purpose of helping those in recovery enjoy the fringe benefits of sobriety.

Itinerary

The itinerary for each trip is different and if a land vacation is required, it is arranged. Our Sober Safari to Africa was completely on land (except for private flights). Onboard arrangements for locations, times, equipment, etc. are made via email with the ship long before anyone arrives. Meetings are created around ship board events and port visits in order to give the greatest vacation flexibility. Each itinerary is included in the Welcome Aboard packet attendees receive at the gathering on the first day of the cruise. The time, location, and other details of many 12 step meeting are listed in a portable schedule which folds easily into name tags. While registration is mandatory, participation in any and all events is optional.

On larger trips, daily Al Anon meetings are  included for friends, family and loved ones of those in recovery.
